Brag About Yourself...

I was browsing through my former company's magazine when I came across an article where I had been interviewed..And suddenly I felt like going through the time tunnel to time when it all started...

Well, as part of the Journalist cum Magazine Proof Reader's Team it was my duty to either interview people or to proof read the articles which have been written. Never in my life have I dreamt of being the subject! Well, it seemed that the magazine was interested in sharing about the experiences of the winners, the preparations, the presentations, the feelings prior to the winning and upon winning etc.

And so I received this email from one of the journalist himself.

Hi,
As spoken earlier, (sorry this took a little while longer than expected) please look into the below:
"The Wire" 3rd edition is due. Firstly, my apologies for sending this out on such short notice but we would really appreciate it if you champs could furnish us with the below, at least by this Friday morning the 30th. Initially this was supposed to be conducted via interviews but given the time constraints, we have resorted to a more clinical approach.

With that let me request you to take some time out and write an essay pertaining to your being conferred your well-deserved award. Feel free to draft your essay using any topic that comes into mind and the more you pour into it, the better for me. But please make sure you address the following points:
- Your tenure with the company
- Your tenure with Cust Service Industry
- Your educational background
- The roles you have played
- Why you think you were nominated - please include how you felt, be as extensive as possible
- Brief touch on the 'process' - the presentation (how you made yours and how you made sure you stand out), the judging (the experience, any and all info you can recall), the Q&A session - what q's came up and how you tackled em q's
- The Awards Night (your prep-up, your expectations, your emotions running wild)
- The after-effects of the whole experience (Awards Night 12th Oct onwards, eg people's perceptions, comments)
- How you managed the whole larger-than-life experience
- How the whole experience makes you want to give your smartest "all" into what you do and help others do the same - basically the positive after-effects that will have a sustainable impact
- Anything and everything in between the points above that you feel may be relevant, pour it all out - please!
- Your motto for life, where you draw your inspiration from, any advice for the Wire's readers - advice not confined to just work but as life lessons - positive traits that readers can immediately emulate/adapt as their own...
And please fill up the essay with your own original quotes / ideas.

As I was trying to fill in the blanks, I realized that I was never good at self selling myself.

Never during interview, never before and definitely not now either. No matter how hard I tried, it was just not that easy. I mean if you are good just share the excellent stuffs which you have done, and that's what I normally did. But honestly, I need to improve on the chosen vocabulary. Instead of I am good at, I should have it written as I excelled in..Instead of I work hard, I should have it written as I am highly driven..Boy that ain't easy..

I guess all this while I had never really compliment myself on those achievements which I have experienced and gained..For me it is just the standards which I have managed to achieve and that it should not be of a big deal anyway...Even during my KPI session, my boss has always scolded me for not rating myself higher..I don't feel like I am worth the high ratings..Or perhaps I have set my standards too high..I am known as Miss Perfectionist and that I can not accept defeat or failure that easy..So even when the agreed target has been set, my personal target was always higher..And so I guess achieving the agreed target was a norm to me (Subhanallah trust me, there's no riya' in that sentence)..

Plus since we were kids we were told to stay humble and be true to yourself..Err, perhaps this situation does not count but still..

It was definitely a challenge to self sell myself during an interview..Honestly, I would freeze if anyone were to ask me "Why should we hire you?" hehehe..

Because I am good..Others could be better..

Because I am hard working..Others might have no issues in sleeping in the office..

But Alhamdulillah once I have gained the experience needed it was easier as all I have to do is to share the achievements and experience whenever I am being interviewed for a new job or position hehe..

But to those who are still 'uncomfortable' in bragging about yourself, perhaps you can utilize some tips below without the burden of feeling guilty in bragging hehe..

1. Know your strength & convert it into results - Most often it is easier to 'mention' your strengths but without any proof of the success achieved it can be quite difficult for the interviewer to justify the need to select you amongst others..Imagine there are hundreds or maybe thousands of candidates out there saying the same thing..I am this..I can do..I am willing to..But if you can complete the sentence with..Hence, I have achieved..I excelled..It would surely made you stand out from the rest...

* The strength I have above is translated below (being able to beat the huge sumo guy)..Err, you get what I mean right? :)

2. Appreciate your effort - Hehehe this is something which I am not..or rather still struggling with..Most often we compared ourselves with others and most time we see others as way better than us..If this ever happened to you..Stop for a while and look back to all your achievements..I am sure there are a few things which you believed you could have done better..But often you will know that you have done your best!

3. Increase your vocabulary - It sounds silly?..Not really, great vocabulary helps to emphasize the differences and not to mention adding a little bit of weight in your bragging effort..words like great, excellent, achievement brings more weight as compared to okay,  managed to, achieved..

Well, those are the tips that worked for me..It may not suits you, especially those who are braver and more daring in self selling or those who are more timid than I am (although I tend to believe that I am the most timid person ever! hehe)

Okay, back to the present time..It's 6 plus now..And my stomach is growling hungrily..Not that I can eat now anyway..But there's a bazaar which I need to go to..And so don't forget to brag about yourself okay :)

there are times we have to forget our upbringing of being down to earth and bring-up bakul sendiri so that some journalist can do their job of finding heroes to inspire (or perspire) others.
